Why is dental hygiene important?
Very few people are able to perform perfect plaque control at home. Research shows that bacterial plaque is what causes both tooth decay and gum disease. Having these deposits removed thoroughly on a regular basis is a great way to prevent these diseases and extend the life of your dental restorations and crowns.
A hygienist removes plaque and calculus from your teeth which, if left, could result in decay, gum disease and even tooth loss. When plaque forms you can remove it with your toothbrush and floss but when it has formed to calculus only a hygienist can remove it using special instruments.
Research has shown that Periodontal disease can be very harmful to your body and has been linked to cardiovascular disease and miscarriage in pregnant women.
Why can’t my dentist do this work?
A dental hygienist is specially trained and will spend longer treating and teaching you how to look after your mouth. It is more cost effective for the hygienist to perform these tasks, rather than the dentist.
