Implants/Filling the Gap
If you are unfortunate to have lost a tooth, this can spoil your smile and make eating more difficult. There are a few options that can be considered depending on your individual situation.
The Dental Implant
A tooth implant is an excellent option as other teeth are not involved. A dental implant is like an artificial tooth root, which is placed into the jaw bone where the tooth has been lost. After the healing time of between 3-6 months, a ceramic crown tooth is attached to the implant. Not everyone has the right jaw bone structure for this treatment and you will need to be checked by your dentist to see if this is the right option for you.
Dental implants are the best permanent long term option for replacing missing teeth.
Bridge
A dental bridge is an artificial tooth supported by the teeth on either side of the space. This is a good option if the teeth on either side also need a crown for strength. They are prepared as they would be for a crown but instead of a single tooth structure they have the middle tooth bonded to them to fill the gap. Bonded bridges that do not require the reshaping of the neighbouring teeth can sometimes be used. A dental bridge is an attractive long term permanent way of helping you fill the gap.
Dentures
There are several types of dentures suitable as a short or medium term tooth replacement.
The plastic partial denture fits on the gum and sometimes has wire clasps to hold it in place.
The metal partial denture fits exactly with clasps and rests on existing teeth. Both are removable, and you take them out to clean.
